Every 18 to 24 months
Upholstery cleaning that starts with what the fabric can take
Sofas, recliners, love seats, dining chairs and vehicle interiors. Each behaves differently under extraction, so the fabric gets checked before any water touches it.
Chapter 01
Every 18 to 24 months, and sooner with kids and pets
Upholstery holds soil the same way carpet does, it just shows it later because you sit on top of the dust instead of walking through it. Eighteen to twenty-four months keeps most homes ahead of it. Households with kids or pets run on a shorter clock, closer to twelve months, because spills and shedding load the fabric faster than normal wear does.
The reason to stay ahead of it rather than wait for a piece to look dirty is the same reason as a carpet: soil sitting in fabric is abrasive, and it works on the fibre whether you can see it yet or not.

Upholstered seating in a front room ready for cleaning
Sofas, recliners, love seats and dining chairs each behave differently under extraction
A sofa cushion and a dining chair seat are not the same job. Cushion fill holds moisture longer than a thin chair pad, so drying time and how much water goes in have to change piece to piece. Recliners add mechanisms and seams that a straight extraction pass can miss if you are not working around the frame.
Love seats and sectionals get treated in sections rather than as one flat surface, because the arms, the back and the seat cushions are usually different fabric weights even on the same piece.
Vehicle interiors, the piece most people never have cleaned
Car seats and carpet take more concentrated soil per square foot than almost anything in a house, from shoes, food and years of general use, and most owners never book a professional clean for it at all. The extraction work is the same principle as a sofa, run in a tighter space with more seams and less airflow for drying.
Fabric checks before any water touches the piece
Not every fabric takes water the same way. Before extraction starts, the piece gets checked so the method matches the material rather than assuming every cushion can take the same treatment a carpet does.
That check is also where colourfastness and any existing damage get spotted, which is the same instinct that runs the carpet dyeing side of the business: look at what is actually there before doing anything to it.
